1 May 1707 was the day the Act of Union came into effect, joining England and Scotland to form the Kingdom of Great Britain.
Hmm
Took a newly calved Holstein heifer to Gisburn auction mart. The reason being that CCM Skipton has now moved itself into the blue tongue zone so if I took an animal to their auction I would have to sell it whatever the price as I couldn't bring it home because of DEFRA regulations. I also sold Elidih 3rd of Glengarnock as she had lost her calf and everytime she calved she had huge teats which the calf couldn't suckle easily so it was time to go.

2nd Mr Beresford came for 2 loads of silage. Had to operate on a Holstein cow that had a displaced abomasum. John the vet was in a rush as he was going on a pampered weekend at a health farm.
  ANABLA 12th OF CALLACHALLY Calved
Bull Calf
3rd Joined the biggest crowd in the football league this season to watch another victory and Mr Scally being relegated.
4th Unfortunately we pull a dead calf off a heifer. The calf was coming backwards way and had a leg back as well. We put a Holstein bull calf on to it and it seems to take to it very well.

BARAVALLA BANARACH OF MURRAY COOPER Calved dead calf.
Bull Calf
5th Andy takes 2 steers to CCM Skipton for slaughter for the shop. Tom, Laura and I go the Highland Fling in Sheffield unfortunately without any animals. But we have a good day helping out and watching the judging.
Just as I am setting off for Sheffield the exhaust blows on the van so it is a noisy ride there and back.

6th Take a yearling heifer direct to the slaughter house in Rawdon. It has been blind since birth and has managed ok in its own small environment but it was time to let it go. M Cowgill took 8 holsteins home. Show some prospective buyers round the cows and calves.

7th E Taylor took 32 holsteins home. M Cowgill took another 12 holsteins home, It must be spring time. Put Coinneach to the cows in the brow field.
R Lambert came for some silage. Take the quad bike for a new gear box thankfully under warranty.

  SHEENA 5th OF FINNART Calved
Heifer Calf
8th M Kayley took 17 heifers home. M Cowgill was here again and took some more home.

We had the unpampered vet Neil to do some PD's all four embryo's seem to have held which is amazing. S Crabtree brings 150 mule hoggs for the summer.
9th Let 19 in calf holsteins out onto the moor it is 4 loads with landrover and trailer and as is usual on Haw Lane I have a puncture, Why can't the council look after its roads.

10th

Let another 7 Holsteins out into the road through field at Wenningber. Also after giving them their second Huskvac dose let 11 calves into the croft at Wenningber.

Go and pick the bike up after it has been fixed. Mend the wheels that fit on the front of the Manitou that we use to push the silage to the sides in the feed passage.
11th Let 11 Holstein calves out Wenningber then clean the building out as I hope Stapleton's will come and spread the FYM this week.
Take 3 highland cows to Bacup near Burnley for a visitor attraction for a farm shop that has just opened. These are just to put them on until the cows with calves that they have bought are in calf.

I then go to a committee meeting at Elland for the North of England Highland Cattle breeders Club.

12th Move the Highland heifers from Malham onto Highside and bring down 7 3 year olds off Highside to put them with Coirechoille on the top moor.
Enjoy a fantastic atmosphere but a frustrating night as Carlisle probably just deserve to win.
13th Wendy and I head up to Edinburgh for a few days of wedding venue searching for Rachel and Dave's wedding next year. But not before the calves I let out on sunday see fit to destroy 10mtrs of dry stone wall after escaping through an open gate. Leave Andy in charge.

14th Have a nice trip round Fife as we look at 4 venues all very different.

15th Have a look south of Edinburgh at another 2 castles I think one of these is "the place". Rachel and I then head south to meet Tom on the
motorway as he is coming from Loch Awe before going on to Carlisle where we have the most brilliant night thanks to Jonny Howson we are now off to WEMBLEY. WE'RE THE FAMOUS LEEDS UNITED AND WE'RE OFF TO WEMBLEY.

16th The adrenalin is still flowing as Wendy and I go to Perth where I am judging the Highland Cattle show and sale. I didn't get shouted at to much.
The bull we bought in Oban in February is delivered to Perth so he can come down on the same wagon as the few I bought in the sale.

17th Put Connor out with the show team. Put a new bull that we bought in the Torloisk dispersal in Perth CALUM BUIDHE OF TORLOISK with another bunch of cows.
Move Coinneach into a different field as he seems to have taken a liking to my neighbours holstein cows.
Go to Otley show to pick up the Highland club banners and info. We can't show because of the Blue Tongue restrictions. :(
  JASMINE OF CIM Calved
Bull Calf
We have to take the calf off her as she hasn't any milk I put it on a the Holstein cow that had the twisted stomach.

18th Sarah is at home doing some more Open Farm Sunday planning.

19th Take one steer to an abattoir near Burnley for the farm shop at Bacup.
Take 2 steers to CCM Skipton for our own shop.
Take Coinneach and his bunch of cows onto Skillams and bring Wallace home.
Can I say thank you to the ignorant cretin who saw fit to leave the gate open on the top moor so 50 of Crabby's sheep could wander 3 miles on the track known as Langber lane nearly onto Highside. A good way of wasting an hour and a half.
20th ANNE MARIE OF WAINSMORE Calves
Heifer Calf
21st As I write this it seems a long time ago.

22nd P.Bolland took 16 holstein heifers home. Took 12 holsteins into the Haw Lane field with Hellifield Dundee.

Took Coinneach and his cows and calves on to Skellholmes Top. Brought Wallace home put him in with Tearlach and Eric.
23rd One of our holstein bulls went to Newhouse Bros at Settle to serve a bunch of heifers.

Eric goes up to Kendal to look after a couple of highland cows.
Clean the cubicles out.

24th Wash all the animals ready for the show on Monday. Tearlach goes to Barnoldswick to M. Garrity's to look after his cows.

25th An early start as 13 of us set off for Wembley with a lot of optimisim. We leave the mini bus at Uxbridge and take the tube to the ground. What a fantastic place, It has cost a lot of money but it is worth it, the old Wembley was a dump but this is something else. Lord Mawinney and his useless bunch of officials at the football league will be happy that we lost and can provide division one with big crowds next season. Well done to Doncaster they scored and we did'nt. We had a great season I can't wait for the next one.
26th Tom and I set off early to go up to Corebridge for the Northumberland County Show. We have a very good day with Seonaid of Cruachan Beag winning the championship for the second year running.

27th Took Wallace to Flasby to Jonathon and Celia's to serve their cows
28th Go and take a tour round Langcliffe Scars and Highside.

29th Generally tidying up for sunday.
30th Move some calves and clean their building out. Tom decides to make a maze with some big bales in the silo building. I leave him to it.

31st Put the finishing touches to all the displays for tomorrow.
